Salmonberry School

Salmonberry Elementary School students have launched a community-based civics curriculum that has ignited their passion for environmental issues around Orcas Island in Washington State. The students noticed a litter problem and decided to form an organization called K.E.L.P., Kids for the Environment through Litter Prevention. They wrote letters to partners about fundraising for adding garbage cans and trash collection. They also spoke at a county council meeting on the subject. Their efforts have rallied community support and donation offers. The full story is here.

The Calhoun School

In the spring of 2012, The Calhoun School in New York City embarked on a major national initiative intended to reshape the conversation about institutionalized racism and white privilege in our country. The project, presently under the working title “What Kids of Color Know & White Kids Don’t – Deconstructing Racism,” will include an elementary, middle and upper school curriculum, a documentary film, and an interactive website, intended to reach parents, teachers and students in public and independent schools.

Opal School at the Portland Children’s Museum

Join other passionate educators from around the world at the Opal School Summer Symposium, June 20-22 in Portland, Oregon. This year's focus is the role of the teacher. Over three days, participants, Opal School teacher-researchers and invited guests (including IDEA executive director Scott Nine) enter into deep dialog about what they've been learning in their classrooms and other contexts.
