Description:
The Freie Schule Leipzig was founded in 1990, just before German Reunification, as the first alternative school in the former East Germany. Now, we are a school with 73 children, ages 6 to 12, and 9 staff members. We are currently in the process of expanding in both directions to include grades K through 10.

Our educational philosophy has developed over the past fifteen years, inspired by many other schools and educational reformers as well as our own trials and errors. Basically, we see ourselves as a dynamic learning community where each individual has the right to learn whenever, however, and whatever s/he wants. Matters that concern the entire school body are discussed as a group and voted on democratically in weekly school meetings. The school body is divided into four age-mixed groups, each with about 15 children and two staff members. These groups meet every morning to discuss various issues. Some regular courses are offered (these include, at the moment, woodworking, baking, pottery, math, German and English), but, as with all group and school meetings, attendance is optional. Students spend most of their time engaged in self-directed activities. The doors of the school are open from 7:30pm to 5:00pm.

Tuition is low due to state funding, enabling us to accept any applicant, regardless of financial means. Roughly 40 % of the students come from "low income" families who qualify for free schooling by the state.
